Unified Models for Active Galactic Nucle and Quasars

چکیده

Because the critical central regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and quasars are strongly nonspherical but spatially unresolved, orientation effects have been the source of much confusion. In fact, it now appears that much of the variety in AGN types is just the result of varying orien tation relative to the line of sight. We can define an extreme hypothesis, the straw person model (SPM), in which there are two basic types of AGN: the radio quiets and the radio louds. For each type there is a range in intrinsic luminosity, and the luminosity controls some properties such as the Fanaroff and Riley classes. However, at a given intrinsic luminosity, all other properties such as spectroscopic classification and VLBI component speeds are ascribed to orientation. This model is only a caricature of the unification idea, and is already ruled out on many grounds, but it will be useful for organizing the discussion. I'll describe what I consider to be convincing evidence that orientation effects are important and widespread. The true situation may be in some sense half way between the SPM and the hypothesis that orientation doesn't affect classification at all. To us optimists, the orien tation cup is half full rather than half empty. Although it is too soon to say for sure, the hypothesis that most objects' classifications would be different if seen from other directions is a tenable one today.

Unified Schemes for Radio-loud Agn: Recent Results

After briefly summarizing the main tenets of unified schemes of Active Galactic Nuclei, I review some recent results in the field of unification of radio-loud sources, both for the low-luminosity (BL Lacs and Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies) and high-luminosity (radio quasars and FanaroffRiley type II radio galaxies) populations.

Active Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III: from quasars to radio galaxies?

In this third of a series of papers concerning active galaxies in the FIRST and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys, we analyze the spectroscopic and radio properties of a sample of narrow-line Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), broad-line Seyfert I galaxies, and Quasars in the local universe in order to investigate the dependence of their activity on the mass, spin and accretion rates of the supermassive bla...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

EW[OIII] as an Orientation Indicator for Quasars: Implications for the Torus

We present an analysis of the average spectral properties of 12,000 SDSS quasars as a function of accretion disc inclination, as measured from the equivalent width of the [OIII] 5007Å line. The use of this indicator on a large sample of quasars from the SDSS DR7 has proven the presence of orientation effects on the features of UV/optical spectra, confirming the presence of outflows in the NLR g...

A key argument in favor of orientation based unification schemes is the finding that among the most powerful 3CRR radio sources the (apparent) median linear size of quasars is smaller than that of radio galaxies, which supports the idea that quasars are a subset of radio galaxies, distinguished by being viewed at smaller angles to the line of sight. Recent measurements of radio sizes for a few ...
